Around the globe, self-adhesive labels generate tons of liner material that remains a leftover once they have been applied. The new InNo-Liner self-adhesive material by HERMA provides remedy. It does not require a liner and is free of silicone and bisphenol. Disposal is no longer necessary. More labels fit onto a roll, which in turn is easier to transport. System downtimes are reduced by fewer roll changeovers. cab has further developed its HERMES QL linerless print and apply system for applications with InNo-Liner self-adhesive material. A special stroke applicator applies the printed labels automatically in one operation. This is a unique feature on the market. Efficiency and availability increase.
Printer and applicator
HERMES QL label printers have been designed for use in logistics, anywhere industrial companies label shipping boxes with data. The print method is direct thermal. Equipped with a HQI 4034 stroke applicator, HERMES QL can label a maximum of 25 cardboard boxes per minute. Labels are sucked by an electrically driven fan. Only the stroke cylinder requires compressed air.
And the winner is: InNo-Liner
InNo-Liner self-adhesive material by HERMA is wound continuously onto rolls. It can be printed by a HERMES QL printer at variable heights and then be separated as labels using a cutter. Unlike standard linerless products on the market, InNo-Liner self-adhesive material is not sticky from the outset. It therefore does not require siliconized backing material.
HERMA InNo-Liner material has been the result of a pioneering performance by the company and its long-established leading edge in the production of self-adhesive materials based on multi-layer technology. The special operating principle of InNo-Liner material is based on two layers of adhesive that are applied simultaneously. The outer layer is initially deactivated. The material therefore does not adhere. Only when dispensing the material as labels, the adhesive is activated on the applicator by atomized steam within fractions of a seconds. InNo-Liner material adheres strongly and permanently to absorbent cardboard or similar paper-like substrates. It provides the targeted resistances when printing and processing both in the climate lab and in practical tests. As InNo-Liner is free of bisphenol, it allows labels be applied even onto food packaging.
Collaboration
cab and HERMA are sure of conserving natural resources and reducing negative impacts on the environment. Forces have been joined to provide the packaging industry a device for printing and applying InNo-Liner self-adhesive material in fully automated packing lines in one operation. This has now been achieved. “Most of our customers know us well and simply expect us to solve every task in an economical manner”, says Dirk Roland, International Sales Director for cab label printing systems: “In this case, we evaluated the comprehensive modular system of our HERMES systems and transferred the requirements of InNo-Liner material to the specifications of our printers and peripherals.”
HERMA’s Self-adhesive Material Division is convinced as well: “Our claim has always been 'Honestly sustainable, damn close'. On the one hand, this applies to our actions. We want to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. On the other hand, it also applies to our products. When it comes to real sustainability, it is not sufficient just doing something. It is about doing everything in a different manner. This is how HERMA InNo-Liner material came about. In this respect”, says Ralf Drache, Director Sales & Marketing at the HERMA Self-adhesive Material Division, “it is great that cab has managed to develop such an impressive system in such a short time.”
